Don’t Be Bored – Grab a Board!

150“What are we doing today, Mommy?” This is the big question I hear every weekend.

Hong Kong is such a dense and compact city; it’s not easy to find a fun activity where we can also have enough personal space. We can only go to shopping malls, theme parks and playgrounds so many times before both adults and children get bored. It is especially difficult to find places to take the kids to when it’s raining! Luckily for us, Hannah and Jonah have loved playing board games ever since they learned to roll a dice. They have hours of fun and we don’t even need to leave the house.

Hannah and Jonah really enjoy playing board games!

Their first board game was Snakes and Ladders. Jonah was only about 12 months old when we received it as a gift. While it’s fun, it can be very educational too! The kids learned to count, take turns, and be good sports with this game. Board games can be very physical as well. The game Twister taught the kids colors, the concepts of right and left as well as stretching and reaching.

Some of our favorites

By now, we have acquired about 25 board games. The newest ones are Pictionary (great for creativity and critical thinking) and Junior Monopoly (helps train math concepts and negotiation strategies). We even have many travel size board games to take on vacation and road trips.

Learn sight words while playing!

In fact, the kids are now playing with the challenging games that Simon and I bought and played with well before they were born! However, I must admit, Hannah, Jonah and I like playing among ourselves more than with Simon. The three of us will sometimes let each other win but when we play with Simon, he always wins!!
